Spandex Ballet
Flock of Frenchfries
The OPD
The Squirts
My Niece Denise

woohoo. It's looking like there might also be time for people who want to jump onstage with an accoustic guitar or other low-fi implements of destruction to do a number while a band is setting up. I am really freakin excited about this now!
sad that the dirty faces had to drop out, but happy that the human brains are able to jump on!

also, in the arena of requests.....I have just rediscovered my love for gene loves jezebel. Any takers?

Ha!

See what I get for posting the "final" list?
My first cancelation.
The Dirty Faces have a show in NY that night, so they will regretfully not be able to play joy division at the new wave cabaret.
Who will grab their spot?

The (more or less) Final List

Superfriends
Amoeba Knievel
Dirty Faces
Yes Darlings
Microwaves
Ludlow
Styles for Modern Living
Fangs of the Panda
Amanda&Allison
(Cindy+?)
(Thad+ co)
The OPD
The Squirts
My Niece Denise

That's 14 acts, and 14 is just about all that can reasonably fit. We might be able to squeeze in a couple of solo/accoustic people while bands are setting up...let me know if you are interested in that.
Please remember that you have to get onstage, set up, tune up, play, and get off stage in 20 minutes or less. If you can fit 3 songs in there, fine...but I think in most cases it will be 2.
I'm super excited about this line up! I'm super excited about the night!
I have to work out with Joel how the cover charge will work...I know in past years we had a low cover charge (like $2!!!) and everyone paid. The majority of the money this year will go to a fund set up for the folks who lost their homes in the morningside fire...if you don't know about that, email me. I'll try to find a link to post here too.
Joel is excited to bring Rickety back to the pub once a month, and talked about bringing back the ole tequila special too....better start getting your iron stomach in shape now.

New Wave Cabaret #2-1/22/98

At the 31st Street Pub, which would be the home of the New Wave Cabaret (and Rickety in general) for the next three years.
Gary hosted again, with his hair spraypainted purple and pink this time. He was assisted by Sabrina who also sang with the Manny Theiner Supergroup at the finale.
The cake (and videotape) was by Sarah Lewis....she made three round cakes with gorgeous spun sugar cages on top of them. Unfortunately the cakes got sat on the grill behind the bar and they were pretty melty by the time we served them up. Still....delicious! Spaz could not be there so he sent along a cassette of himself doing dramatic readings of cure lyrics.

If you're not on this list, but you think you should be, email me right now to straighten it out. If you ARE on this list, but you no longer want to be, email me right now about that too.
As it stands, I can fit a maximum of two more acts on the bill, and that is pushing it. I am going to give people a couple days to respond (there are a few people who are not on the list who mentioned wanting to play, but did not respond to my confirmation email) and then I will open it up to the first taker(s).
With a list this long I am going to have to limit most acts to two numbers. There will be special exceptions for people who help me out in different ways--especially by donating equipment for the night. Also, I think we have all gotten a lot more professional since 1998, but I gotta say that we will need to be speedy with the changeovers to make this work. I just watched the video from 1998 and there is so much dead air time that we could have had at least two more acts. So if you are playing, make sure you can bang through your set plus set up and break down in under 20 minutes. Deal?
Soon I will be asking for proposed song lists from people....I want to make sure we don't have any repeats (within the night) and that we don't err on the side of gloomy. I love Joy Division as much as the next goth, seriously....but the new wave cabaret should be more about having fun and getting people to dance than about being morose and getting people to slam shots of whiskey and slit their wrists in the bathroom. So---if you haven't already told me you plan to do joy division....don't do joy division. There are so many lovely INXS songs in the world.....hint hint...
OK! thanks everybody for your enthusiasm! this is gonna be a great night!
